Cheap Power Racks: Review Guide

In this guide we’ll be taking a look at some of the best cheap power racks available. The cages that will be reviewed are the Rep PR-1000, Titan T-2, TDS Power Rack and Fitness Reality 810 XLT.

A short disclaimer before getting into this article: We recommend that you put your hard-earned money towards a medium or high-end power rack, even if you have to save up a little more money to do so. Mid to high-end cages tend to be more stable and last longer than “budget” ones.
 

Do you want to build a simple home gym, but don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on it?

If you don’t have a big budget and are intent on buying a cheap cage, you should at least try to get the most bang for your buck.

To help you make your choice, we’ll be looking at some of the best cheap power racks available. This will include examining their specifications and features, such as dimensions, hole spacing, and weight capacity. This way, you’ll know if the rack can fit in your gym area, and if it can accommodate your training needs.

The first power rack we’ll be looking at is the PR-1000 by Rep Fitness.
 

Specifications

  • Height – 84”
  • Footprint – 58” x 48” inches
  • Inside space – 26 inch depth and 44 inch width
  • Material – 2×2” steel tubes
  • Weight capacity – 1,000lbs
  • Hole spacing – 2” (Every 5th pin hole is numbered)
  • Additions – Two pullup bars (400lb weight capacity for each bar) – 1.25” (Diameter) and 2” (Diameter), bar holders on the front of safeties

 

Dimensions

The PR-1000 will leave a footprint of around 58” x 48”, and is 84” tall. While this isn’t necessarily super tall, be sure to check the height of your ceiling to make sure it’ll fit.
 

Steel

This rack is made using 2” x 2” steel. While it doesn’t have 3” x 3” steel like higher end racks, it’s still reliable and strong. You won’t have to worry about it bending or breaking, as long as you don’t use weights that exceed its weight capacity.
 

Weight Capacity

It has a weight capacity of 1,000lbs. This will be sufficient for most lifters. If you’re lucky enough to be a lifter who can squat or bench more than 700lbs, you should consider purchasing a different rack.
 

Stability

This power rack doesn’t need to be bolted to the ground, nor does it give you the option to. The rack includes weight horns, which, if used, should offer a sufficient amount of stability.
 

Hole Spacing

All of the pin holes are spaced 2” apart, center-to-center. This is okay for most, but if you’re looking for a rack with Westside hole spacing, you should look elsewhere.

Every 5th hole is numbered, but in my opinion, it would have been better to number each hole.
 

Accessories

This rack includes two pull up bars, a 1 ¼” standard bar and a 2” fat bar. Both bars have a weight capacity of 400lbs. This is great if you like to add variety to your pull-ups from time to time.

This rack doesn’t include band pegs, so if you use banded lifts, such as squats with bands, in your training, this isn’t the rack for you.

Now, let’s take a look at the Titan T-2, which is probably the most popular budget rack on our list.

  • Height – 83″
  • Footprint – 48″ x 48″
  • Inside space – 26” depth and 45″ width
  • Material – 2″x 2″ steel tubes
  • Weight capacity – 700 lb
  • Additions – 1 ¼” diameter chin up bar

 

Dimensions

This rack takes up a floor space of 48” x 48”, and has a height of 83”. If you happen to have a basement with a low ceiling, don’t worry, there’s a shorter version of this rack available.
 

Steel

The T-2 uses 2” x 2” steel, which is ubiquitous for racks in this price range.
 

Weight Capacity

The weight capacity for this rack is 700lbs, which is good for the money. Compared to more expensive racks, this isn’t great, but it should be more than enough for the average gym rat. If you need a higher weight capacity you should look at other, more expensive power racks.
 

Stability

Like most other racks in its price range, the T-2 doesn’t have to be bolted down. It includes plate holders, which can be used for added stability during your workouts. If you’re looking for a rack that can be bolted down but is still somewhat inexpensive, check out the Titan T-3.
 

Hole Spacing

The hole spacing is 2” center-to-center, which will be adequate for most lifters.
 

Accessories

The Titan T-2 lacks band pegs, which is the case for most racks that aren’t required to be bolted down.

Additional attachments, such as dip bars and plate holders, are available for this rack.

A chin-up bar is also included, which has a diameter of 1 ¼”.

Weight Capacity

The TDS power rack has a 1,000lb weight capacity, which is definitely worth noting. When regard to weight capacity, this rack is a leader among power racks within its price range.
 

Stability

The rack can’t be bolted down as-is, but it includes weight holders. If you purchase this rack, it’s recommended that you utilize them to help stabilize it.
 

Hole Spacing

The holes are spaced 2” apart, center-to-center. Although this rack doesn’t include the much sought after Westside spacing, it does have numbered holes, which is convenient.
 

Accessories

The rack includes a 1 1/8” chin/pull up bar. The bar is knurled, making it easier to grip.

The TDS doesn’t include band pegs, so if they’re a necessity for your training, you should look at other, more expensive racks.

Optional attachments are available for this rack. They include plate holders, dip bars, padded j-hooks, bar holders and a lat/row attachment.

Lastly, we’ll be looking at the Fitness Reality 810XLT.

  • Footprint – 50.5” x 46.6”
  • Inside space – 24” depth and 42” wide
  • Material – 2″ x 2″ steel
  • Weight capacity – 800 lbs weight capacity
  • Hole spacing – 3”
  • Additions – Multipurpose pull up bars

 

Dimensions

The Fitness Reality 810XLT has a 50.5” x 46.6” footprint and stands 84” tall from the floor to the top of the pull up bar.
 

Steel

This rack is constructed using a 2” x 2” tubular steel frame.
 

Weight Capacity

Its weight capacity is 800lbs, which is roughly 100-200lbs more than similarly priced power racks.
 

Stability

It doesn’t have to be bolted down, but the downside is that it doesn’t include any plate holders for extra stability. To make up for this, you could place a 45lb plate on top of each leg at the front of the rack. This should help prevent the rack from moving.

There are two stability bars at the back of the rack to make it sturdier.
 

Hole Spacing

The rack uses 3” hole spacing, which could be problematic for some lifters.
 

Accessories

It includes a multipurpose chin/pull up bar that can accommodate a regular and neutral grip.

There aren’t any band pegs included with the 810XLT, which is expected because this rack can’t be bolted down.

Optional attachments are also available for this rack. They include weight plate holders, dip bars, j-hooks, and a landmine. You can buy all the attachments together as a set.

Wrapping Up

Of all the cheap power racks discussed in this article, in our opinion, the TDS Power Rack is the best.

It has a high weight capacity for its price. If you’re worried about your rack being able to handle the weights you’re lifting, this should definitely give you some piece of mind.

It has numbered pin holes. With this, you’ll be able to quickly identify where to set the safeties for particular lifts.

Also, there are additional attachments available for this rack.

Given its price and features, the TDS rack is a great option.
